Why "Studio314 by MB"?

I chose my company name with the aspiration of creating a sacred space.
I want to create physically beautiful and emotionally nurturing places for my audience to grow. I desire to contribute to other's sacred spaces, whether with the art I make or with the creative tools
I pass on in my workshops.
Sacred space has been a key concept that I have designed my own studio space around, and
"314" is a number that I associate with God. Exodus 3:14 is just one story that reveals some of the mystery and wonder of God. I want to honor God with my work and how I show up in my life.
For most of my life, suppressed grief from trauma and innate depressive tendencies kept me from the fullness of life I knew I could have. I witnessed my dad's mental illness and death in 1998 when I was only eleven. It has taken longer than I had wished, but I have gradually moved from a life of
survival into a thriving mental state. Yet...I am still healing.
My grief and healing journeys have inspired me to create a company that is
centered around service to the grieving and encouraging caretakers of the grieving.

I am centering the mission of my company
around these three modalities:
Creating
I want my stationery and creative workshops to inspire the grieving to learn how to express their grief, through art, without shame or avoidance.
I aspire to coach the creatively stuck into rhythms of creative agency.

Connecting
I dream of creating greeting cards that fill the gap in relatable conversations about grief.
I also hope to lead conversations about best grief practices to bridge the gap between caretakers for the grieving and those grieving.
I also aspire to bring grief-based organizations into connection with my audience.

Crying Out
I want to encourage my audience to reclaim the ability to seek help. To choose pain now in admitting a need, in exchange for the hope of finding relief.
The truth is that we all suffer with something. When we admit a need, we are one step closer to experiencing personal wholeness, and strengthening community connection.
Restoration happens when we suffer in community, and refuse to do it alone.

Monica's senior BFA thesis gallery exhibition, 2010.
This collection was inspired by her experience with grief. She developed her work around the longing to store memories, and make room for healing, within these original vessels.
